When removal is the right call
Not every problem tree needs to come out. A tree that drops limbs after a dry summer may just need a crown clean, and a tree touching the roofline may only need clearance pruning. Removal is usually the answer when the tree is dead or dying, when it's structurally unsound at the trunk or a major union, when roots are lifting a slab or invading services, when it's the wrong species for the space and will never stop being a problem, or when it has to go for approved building work.
A good arborist will tell you when the tree can be saved. If someone quotes removal without looking at whether pruning would fix it, get a second opinion.
How removal actually happens
Straightforward trees on open blocks get felled in one piece where there's a safe drop zone. Most Wagga suburban jobs aren't that simple. Trees near houses, fences and powerlines come down in sections — the climber or elevated work platform operator takes the canopy off progressively, lowering pieces on ropes, then works down the trunk. Larger jobs bring in a crane so sections can be lifted clear rather than lowered through a tight space.
Sectional work costs more than felling because it's slower and needs more gear and more people. That's why access drives the price more than height does.
Council approval comes first
Under Part 5 of the Wagga Wagga Development Control Plan 2010, council approval is required before clearing any living tree 8 metres or taller, any native vegetation in a wetland, and any tree of any size on a register of Significant or Heritage trees. That register covers species of local conservation significance, and River Red Gum is one of them — which matters here, given how many line the Murrumbidgee corridor.
Dead trees are exempt — council doesn't require consent to remove one, or to take dead branches out of a living canopy. The catch is that "dead" is council's call, not the owner's: a tree in severe decline is still a living tree under the rules.

What it costs
Small trees under 5 metres generally run $250 to $800. The typical suburban removal — 5 to 10 metres — sits between $800 and $2,500. Large trees from 10 to 15 metres run $2,500 to $6,000, and anything above that with crane access can reach $15,000.
Three things move the number: access, proximity to structures, and what has to happen to the debris. A tree you can drive a chipper up to is far cheaper than the same tree behind a narrow side gate.
