Why palms are their own job
A palm trunk is fibrous rather than woody, so it behaves differently under a saw and it's far heavier than it looks — a mature palm section holds a lot of water. Dead frond skirts harbour rats, wasps and spiders, and the frond bases on some species carry spines that cause nasty wounds.
Palms also can't be pruned back into shape. Cut the growing point out and the palm dies. Maintenance is limited to removing dead fronds and seed heads.
Common reasons palms come out
Outgrowing the space is the usual one — a Canary Island date palm planted near a house in the eighties is now a very large problem. Dead or dying palms after frost or drought stress are another. Seed drop causing constant mess and self-seeding is a third, and some owners simply want to reclaim a garden bed.
Frond drop is a genuine safety issue over a driveway or path. A dead frond off a mature palm has real weight behind it.
What removal involves
Usually the palm is climbed or accessed by EWP, the fronds and seed heads come off first, then the trunk is taken down in sections. Palm trunks don't chip well in standard machines, so disposal is often by truck rather than chipper — worth knowing because it affects the quote.
The stump can be ground like any other, and palm stumps are generally easier going than gum.
Good news on council approval
Most palms are exempt. Wagga Wagga City Council lists Canary Island Date Palm, Cocos Palm and Desert Fan Palm on its Undesirable Plant Species list, and trees on that list can be removed without a permit regardless of height.
