Who is responsible for what

Broadly, the network operator maintains clearance around the main distribution network — the lines running along the street. The property owner is generally responsible for vegetation around the service line, the one running from the street to your own building.

That service line is where most disputes and most risk sit. It's lower, it's often obscured by canopy, and people don't realise it's their problem until a limb takes it down. Essential Energy is the network operator for this region — they're the first call if you're unsure which line you're looking at.

Why it can't be a DIY job

Approach distances near live conductors are set by regulation, and working inside them requires specific training and accreditation. Electricity can also arc across a gap — you do not have to touch a line to be electrocuted, and a wet or green limb conducts.

Every year people are seriously hurt pruning near a service line with a pole saw from a ladder. If a tree is touching or near any conductor, stay clear and make a call instead.

What clearance work involves

An accredited operator assesses which line is involved and what approach distances apply, arranges an outage or isolation with the network operator where that's required, and prunes to the specified clearance — usually with directional pruning that keeps growth away from the line rather than simply cutting it back.

Where a tree will never stop being a problem in that position, removal and replanting with a species suited to growing under lines is the cheaper answer over a decade.

If a tree is on a line right now

Stay well clear, keep others away, and ring Essential Energy. Treat every fallen conductor as live regardless of appearances.

We only refer operators who hold the relevant accreditation for this work. Ask to see it — for this job in particular, general arborist qualifications are not the same thing.
