Why the stump is quoted separately

Stump grinding needs a different machine to the one that took the tree down, and often a separate visit. That's why it's a separate line item on nearly every quote in the industry.

It's worth deciding up front. Bringing a grinder back to a site later costs more than having it there on the day, so if you know you want the stump out, say so when you're being quoted for the removal.

How deep grinding goes

Standard grinding takes the stump 150 to 300mm below ground level, which is enough for turf or garden bed. If you're paving, pouring a slab or building over the spot, you need it deeper — 400mm or more — and you may need the major surface roots ground out as well. Tell the arborist what's going in afterwards.

Grinding produces a surprising volume of chip. It can be left to backfill the hole, or removed and the hole topped with soil if you're planting.

What affects the price

Diameter is the obvious factor, but access matters as much — a grinder needs to physically reach the stump, and a narrow side gate rules out the larger machines. Proximity to services is the other one: grinding near irrigation, gas, water or power needs care and sometimes a Before You Dig enquiry.

Old, dry, hard stumps take longer than fresh ones. Gum stumps are harder work than most.

What it costs

Typically $100 to $400 per stump. Small stumps in open yards sit at the bottom; large gum stumps with restricted access or nearby services sit at the top. Multiple stumps in one visit are usually cheaper per stump, since most of the cost is getting the machine to site.
