When a crane is the right call
Very large trees — typically over 15 metres — where the canopy overhangs a roof, pool or neighbouring property. Structurally compromised trees where a climber can't safely be in the canopy at all. Sites where there is genuinely nowhere to lower sections on ropes, such as a narrow inner-suburban block with structures on three sides.
It's also the safer answer for trees over infrastructure you cannot afford to damage — a pool, a shed full of gear, a neighbour's new fence.
How the job runs
The crane is set up on the street or driveway with outriggers on load-spreading plates. Each section is rigged and attached to the crane before it's cut, so the weight is held from above rather than dropped. Sections are then lifted clear over the roofline and lowered to a landing zone on the street, where they're processed and chipped.
Nothing falls. That's the entire point — and it's why crane work is often the safest method for the highest-risk trees, not just the most expensive.
Why it can work out cheaper than it looks
A crane day rate is significant, but crane removals are fast. A tree that would take a climbing crew two or three days to dismantle piece by piece can come out in a single day. Fewer days on site, fewer people, and dramatically less handling of material by hand.
Traffic management is usually the hidden cost — street closures or lane control need permits and personnel. That's worth asking about explicitly when comparing a crane quote against a climbing quote.
