Signs worth investigating

Canopy dieback starting at the tips and working back. Leaves that are smaller, sparser or discoloured compared with previous seasons. Sudden limb drop from an apparently healthy tree. Fungal brackets on the trunk or at the base — often a sign of internal decay. Bark splitting or peeling in patches. Sawdust-like frass at the base, indicating borers. New lean, or soil lifting on one side of the base.

Any of these justify a look. Fungal brackets and fresh lean justify an urgent one.

What stresses trees in this climate

The Riverina puts real pressure on established trees. Extended dry periods followed by heavy rain events are hard on root systems, and drought-stressed trees become far more susceptible to borers and pathogens they'd otherwise shrug off.

Construction damage is the other big one and it's badly underestimated. Trenching for services, compaction from machinery, or changing soil levels within the root zone can kill a mature tree — but the decline shows up two to five years later, long after anyone connects it to the building work.

What an assessment involves

A visual inspection of the canopy, trunk, root collar and surrounding site conditions. The arborist looks for decay indicators, structural defects, pest and disease signs, and site factors like drainage, compaction and recent works.

Where internal decay is suspected, further investigation may be recommended. The output is a recommendation: monitor, treat, prune, or remove — with reasons.

It's often cheaper than removal

An assessment costs a fraction of a large removal. If the tree can be saved with targeted pruning and some root-zone management, you've saved thousands and kept a mature tree that would take twenty years to replace. If it can't be saved, you have written grounds for the removal — useful for council and for insurers.
